French counter-tenor Paul Figuier attended the Centre de Musique Baroque in Versailles, and both the CRR and the CNSM in Paris, where he specialised in baroque repertoire, working with conductors and teachers including Christophe Rousset, Hervé Niquet, Jérémie Rhorer, Stéphane Fuget and Jean Tubéry, as well as Masaaki Suzuki, Laurence Equilbey, Paul Agnew and Alain Altinoglu.  Whilst a student, he gained invaluable performance experience, appearing in many productions, most notably singing the roles of Bertarido Rodelinda, Pisandro Il ritorno d’Ulisse, Tolomeo Giulio Cesare and Arete in Lotti’s Giove in Argo (conducted by Leonardo García Alarcón).  During the course of his studies, he was also fortunate to work in several masterclasses, with artists such as  Karine Deshayes, Barabara Hannigan and Magreet Honig.

Now a young soloist with a burgeoning reputation, he is much in demand and has performed with a number of well-known ensembles, including Correspondances, Le Caravansérail, Amarillys, La Capella Mediterranea, and the Atelier lyrique de Tourcoing (with whom he sang both the Scarlatti and Pergolesi Stabat Maters at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées alongside Maïlys de Villoutreys).  In 2019, he recorded the alto solos in the Cantique des trois enfants dans la fournaise by Philippe Hersant with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles/Radio France.  Paul has also enjoyed working as a soloist with the prestigious Comédie Française in Paris, in a much-lauded production of Shakespeare’s La Nuit des Rois (Twelfth Night) directed by Thomas Ostermeier.

More recently, he made his full operatic début in Capella Mediterranea’s production of Cavalli’s Erismena with Leonardo García Alarcón, followed by his debut at the Opéra de Lausanne where he sang Oreste in La Belle Hélène.  He returned to Lausanne this year to record the Mago Cristiano in Rinaldo, conducted by Andrea Marcon and directed by Robert Carsen.  Later this summer, he will sing the title rôle in Stradella’s San Giovanni Baptista with Le Banquet Céleste and Damien Guillon, ahead of a busy 2021/22 season with engagements across France.
