Nottingham born Nicholas Sharratt trained at the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Opera Studio in London. Nicholas’ attractive high-lying and flexible tenor voice has already led him to a wide range of operatic roles, from Monteverdi and Mozart to Donizetti and Rossini.
Nicholas’ most recent operatic roles have been John in Richard Ayres’ Peter Pan for Welsh National Opera, with performances at at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Lucano/Soldier The Coronation of Poppea for Opera North (conducted by Laurence Cummings), Fernando in Donizetti’s Il Furioso all’isola di San Domingo (in Italian) for English Touring Opera and the title role in The Count Ory at Blackheath.
His other roles for Opera North have included Camille The Merry Widow (a role he has also sung in concert with the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by John Wilson), Pedrillo Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Flute A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shepherd/Sprite Orfeo and Lamplighter The Portrait. Operatic engagements elsewhere have included Ernesto Don Pasquale, Count Almaviva Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Paris King Priam and Tamino The Magic Flute for English Touring Opera, Frederic The Pirates of Penzance and Orpheus Orpheus in the Underworld for Scottish Opera, Brighella Ariadne auf Naxos and Albazar Il Turco in Italia for Garsington Opera, Ferrando Cosi fan Tutte in Tokyo, Lippman Of Thee I Sing at the Bregenzer Festspiele, Hotel Porter Death in Venice in concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, First Prisoner Fidelio for Glyndebourne and at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris (conducted by Sir Simon Rattle). Nicholas made his debut at the Edinburgh International Festival as Sam in the world premiere of Ghost Patrol by Stuart Macrae for Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales, winner of a Southbank/Sky Arts award for best opera.
Nicholas has created many roles for Jonathan Dove, including Soppy Hat Swanhunter (Opera North), Adam The Walk from the Garden (Sailsbury and Lichfield Festivals) and Soldier The Unknown Soldier (London Mozart Players), as well as singing Tobias Tobias and the Angel and Lampwick Pinocchio.
Recent concert and oratorio performances have included St. Nicholas for the London Mozart Players and the Wrocklaw Chamber Choir, St. John Passion (tenor arias) for Trondheim Baroque, Messiah at Cadogan Hall, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at St. John’s, Smith Square and Parry Jones in A Serenade to Music at the BBC Proms (with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Davis).
Nicholas’ recordings include Prince Dominic in The Sofa for Independent Opera and Chandos, as well as Andres in Maria del Carmen and Judge in Schwanda the Bagpiper for NAXOS.
In the 2015/16 season, Nicholas sang Remendado Carmen and Nanki Poo The Mikado for Scottish Opera, as well as Richard in the world premiere of The Devil Inside for Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales, a production that was also be performed at the Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. Nicholas has just made his debut for the Royal Opera House in London in Barrie Kosky’s new production of The Nose in the Autumn. Future operatic projects include Snout A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Aldeburgh Festival and Daniel Buchanan Street Scene at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
